Summer 2016
This summer was, by far, an outdoor summer! It was the first summer of venturing to pools all over town, canoeing with D+O, and picking blueberries. We went back to Sanibel Island for our vacation as well. Toward the end of the summer I took a trip to eastern Kentucky to check out a great coal mine reforestation project that you'll here about more in class...hopefully you'll soon get to analyze one of the "tree cookies"
that comes from that project!

Canoeing on the Elkhorn!
Blueberry pickin' and pancake-eatin'
D+O requested a Kit-Kat cake for their birthday party and it was demolished in minutes!
Researchers working to measure the biomass of a white pine. They are stripping the needles from the branches. Each part of the tree is weighed separately! This forest was planted on an old surface mine and is nearly 20 years old!
Weighing the branches. At right is a barren surface mine without trees : (
Do you know your scat? These guys hang out in the reforestation area : )
