BiomeViewer and California Fires Investigation
1. Where are the fires happening?
Use the article below to write down the names and locations of the three fires going on in California right now.
California Wildfire Facts and Updates
Maps tracking the fires
Then use the BiomeViewer to determine the biome of each location by typing in the location into the search bar on the top right of the Biome Viewer tool.
2. How has the land changed over time?
On BiomeViewer, click the right arrow next to the word "Biome" to show the "Anthromes." This is just another word to describe how humans interact with biomes. You can click on the years at the bottom of the BiomeViewer to see how the anthromes have changed over time. For each fire area, summarize (in one sentence) how the anthromes have changed in those regions over time.
3. Next, explore how the temperature and precipitation vary in the three areas overall. Explore the "Terrain" tab. What do you notice that might relate to why fires are common in California?
4. Why do you think the Camp Fire has been worse than the other two?
Think about your biome analysis.
5. Read through the article below, and write down (in brief) the 4 major reasons for why California is such a fire-prone state.
Why Does California Have So Many Wildfires?
6. What would you suggest be done to prevent tragic fires like the three currently raging in California? Describe two suggestions with reasons.
